Drift

Paul Donald

1.12.07 - 12.1.08

Opening Saturday 1st December 4.00pm - 7.00pm

twenty+3 projects is pleased to present Drift, new work by Manchester based New Zealand artist Paul Donald.

Donald synthesizes elements from modernist geometric abstraction, cartooning and furniture design into works of drawing, painting and sculpture. In Drift, he has exchanged his usual power tools and paint for craft knife and ink.  Tiny idiosyncratic furniture-like pieces have been cut, shaped and folded by hand from small dappled primary coloured grid paintings.

Elegant and intentionally quirky these new works grow out of Donald’s interest in the shifting boundaries of identity. “I like to use humour to loosen fixity and meaning”, says Donald.  “For me the loose lines of the work explore how animation in cartoons, as in everyday life, dissolve clear edges, limits or boundaries.”

Donald has shown in Australia and Europe. Drift is his first UK exhibition. His work is in numerous public and private collections, and he is represented in Australia by James Dorahy Project Space, Sydney.

The exhibition is open 12 - 5pm Saturdays or by appointment.
The gallery will be closed Saturday 22nd and 29th December.
